Τα φυσικά του χαρακτηριστικά τον βοήθησαν να επεκτείνει την καριέρα του μέχρι τα 39 του χρόνια κλείνοντας την καριέρα του στην Premier League για την Μάντσεστερ Σ. Όμως δεν ήταν μόνο αυτά. Έτσι λοιπόν και η Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ δεν θα μπορούσε να είχε κερδίσει το “τρίπλ κράουν” αν δεν είχε στην θέση κάτω από τα δοκάρια τον Σμάιχερλ. Όλα ξεκίνησαν στο τέλος της χρονιάς όταν σε έναν θρυλικό ημιτελικό με την Άρσεναλ για το κύπελλο Αγγλίας, στις καθυστερήσεις με το σκορ να είναι 1-1 ο Σμάιχελ έπιασε πέναλντι του Ντένις Μπέργκαμπ. Αυτό έδωσε την ευκαιρία στον Γκιγκς να βάλει το γκολ της νίκης….που ήταν πραγματικά θεϊκό.
