Άλλοι δεν κατάφεραν πολλά, άλλοι έκαναν σπουδαίες καριέρες. Κανείς όμως προς το παρόν, ούτε καν ο Λιονέλ Μέσι, δεν έχει καταφέρει να οδηγήσει την Αργεντινή σε έναν θρίαμβο όπως του 1986. Και κανείς δεν ονόμασε ποτέ τον Γκονζάλο Ιγκουαΐν, ως διάδοχο του Ντιέγκο.
Οι λόγοι αρκετοί. Κατ’ αρχήν ο Ιγκουαΐν δεν είναι τέτοιου στιλ παίκτης. Βλέπει τον κόσμο από το 1.84, δεν είναι ο μεγαλύτερος τεχνίτης του κόσμου, δεν θα ντριμπλάρει με ευκολία δυο-τρεις αντιπάλους, είναι περισσότερο 9αρι και σίγουρα όχι 10αρι. Είναι ο πιο… Ευρωπαίος Αργεντίνος φορ των τελευταίων ετών. Πέρα από αυτό όμως, η αρχική απροθυμία του να φορέσει τη φανέλα της Αργεντινής είναι κάτι που πολλοί δεν ξεχνούν. Ο Γκονζάλο γεννήθηκε στη Γαλλία την περίοδο που ο επίσης ποδοσφαιριστής πατέρας του έπαιζε εκεί και έτσι απέκτησε γαλλικό διαβατήριο. Παρ’ ότι ο Ιγκουαΐν έζησε εκεί μόλις… 10 μήνες, αρνήθηκε αρχικά την κλήση στις μικρές εθνικές της Αργεντινής. Όχι επειδή είχε κανένα δέσιμο με τη Γαλλία, αλλά γιατί με βάση τη τότε νομοθεσία θα έχανε το γαλλικό (κοινοτικό) διαβατήριο, σημαντικό για την καριέρα του. Για αρκετό καιρό παιζόταν ένα πινγκ-πονγκ κλήσεων από Γάλλους (που τον έβλεπαν σαν το νέο Τρεζεγκέ) και Αργεντίνους, αλλά τελικά ο Γκονζάλο επέλεξε την Αργεντινή. Καθυστερημένα όμως για αρκετούς.
Το γεγονός ότι είναι πλέον ο 6ος σκόρερ όλων των εποχών στην Αλμπισελέστε και μάλιστα με καλύτερη αναλογία γκολ ανά παιχνίδι σε σύγκριση με τον Ντιέγκο, τον Λιονέλ και τον Κουν που βρίσκονται πιο ψηλά, δεν άλλαξε την γνώμη του κόσμου. Σε αυτό έπαιξαν τεράστιο ρόλο τα δυο τελευταία του καλοκαίρια με την εθνική που ήταν καταστροφικά. Το 2014 βγαίνει τετ-α-τετ με το Νόιερ, σε σημείο από το οποίο έχει βάλει πάρα πολλά γκολ στη ζωή του, στο 20ο λεπτό ενός τελικού Παγκοσμίου Κυπέλλου με το σκορ στο 0-0, σε μια ευκαιρία να περάσει στο πάνθεον των Μουντιάλ. Χάνει το γκολ, την μεγαλύτερη ίσως ευκαιρία του αγώνα και η Αργεντινή χάνει τελικά ξανά από τους Γερμανούς. Το φετινό καλοκαίρι, η Αργεντινή πάει να σπάσει την γκίνια της με ένα Κόπα Αμέρικα και φτάνει στον τελικό με την Χιλή. Ο Ιγκουαΐν χάνει στο 92′ μεγάλη ευκαιρία, αν και λίγο πλάγια, το 0-0 μένει μέχρι το τέλος και το παιχνίδι πάει στα πέναλτι. Ο Μέσσι ευστοχεί στο πρώτο πέναλτι, ο Ιγκουαΐν στέλνει την μπάλα στον ουρανό στο 2ο και το 3ο χαμένο του Έβερ Μπανέγκα χαρίζει το κύπελλο στους γηπεδούχους. Τι μεσολάβησε από το Κόπα Αμέρικα; Η Νάπολι είναι μόνη πρώτη στη Σέριε Α για πρώτη φορά μετά από 25 χρόνια, από τότε που ο Ντιέγκο οδηγούσε την ομάδα στο τελευταίο σκουντέτο της και ο “Πιπίτα” είναι σίγουρα ο MVP της. “Είναι ο πιο πλήρης επιθετικός που έχουμε στην Αργεντινή” δήλωσε ο Ντιεγκίτο για τον Γκονζάλο που σαν άλλος Τζέιμι Βάρντι ισοφάρισε το ρεκόρ του Ντιέγκο σκοράροντας για 8ο συνεχόμενο παιχνίδι. Η Γιουβέντους με το κακό της ξεκίνημα και η Ρόμα με το τωρινό ντεφορμάρισμα έχουν αφήσει χώρο τόσο στη Νάπολι, όσο και σε Ίντερ-Φιορεντίνα. Η Νάπολι παίζει όμορφο ποδόσφαιρο, στηρίζεται στην καυτή της έδρα και έχει τον Ιγκουαΐν σε δαιμονιώδη φόρμα.
